How To Insulate Your Apartment For Winter

Alexa Morales

When winter comes and the weather gets a lot colder, you might find that your energy bills have skyrocketed. You don't want to have to bear the cold and wear six or seven layers in order to survive comfortably in your apartment. Instead, you want to make sure that you make the most of the money that you do spend on heat by ensuring that it does not escape from your apartment. Here are some tips for insulating your apartment.

1. Use Rubber Sealant

First, go to a hardware store and purchase strips of rubber sealant that are specifically designed for the insulation of windows. Cut the strips so that they are size of each of the sides of your window and press them into place. The adhesive that is included with the strips should keep the strips in place and ensure that no drafts get through the window, allowing you to avoid having cold air blow in or warm air blow out from the sides of your window.

2. Get Curtains

Once you have sealed the edges of your window, go to a store and purchase heavy fabric curtains that match the furniture in the room. These curtains will be able to help insulate the glass itself and ensure that the warm air pouring out of your radiator does not get chilled by the glass. Try to make sure that you get layered curtains so that you can use the lighter curtains during the day when there is some warmth from the sun and light coming in through your windows. Pull the heavier curtains over your windows when it gets dark and the temperature drops.

If you cannot afford to purchase curtains, the same effect can be achieved by simply hanging up a heavy blanket over the door when it gets dark. This will allow you to insulate your home but not block out any light.

3. Cover Vents

Finally, locate any vents in your apartment that might be letting in cold air from the outside or from the unheated hallway. Cover these with a piece of cloth and seal them on the corners, not all around. This will allow some of the air to still leave your apartment when you need to vent it but will block out the majority of the cold air.
